Distance between coordinates
What this tool does
This tool calculates the straight-line distance in kilometers between two locations on the Earth, based on their GPS coordinates. It uses the haversine formula, which accounts for the Earth's curvature, to provide a more accurate measure than simple flat-plane geometry.
The result is an approximation. Because it measures a straight line through the Earth rather than along roads or terrain, the value will be shorter than the actual travel distance by car or foot.
Common uses
- Estimating the gap between two addresses for logistics planning
- Checking if two facilities are within a specific radius for site selection
Input data
| Parameter | Required | Example | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
coordinates1 | Yes | 41.2522,-12.10 | Enter the first location as latitude and longitude separated by a comma (e.g., 41.2522,-12.10). This field is required. |
coordinates2 | Yes | 41.2522,-12.30 | Enter the second location as latitude and longitude separated by a comma (e.g., 41.2522,-12.30). This field is required. |
Output data
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
result | Returns the straight-line distance in kilometers as a text number (e.g., 20.00) if the coordinates are valid, or an empty value if the input format is incorrect. |
